This delicate pair of walrus ivory earrings features one of our favorite creatures, the delightful hummingbird, in gleaming sterling silver and handcrafted Zealandia design.
Each hummingbird body is hand carved from fossilized walrus ivory, an increasingly rare material that is 500 to some 3,000 years old. This fossilized ivory lies underground for much of its life where minerals color it the rich earthen shades that are its signature. It is an important part of Native Alaskans' economy, and these indigenous peoples gather the fossilized ivory to be carved into art works or sold and traded.
