Our silver and fossilized ivory silver whale tail pendant takes an iconic image—the whale’s tail, or fluke—as its central theme, creating a pendant that wears like a talisman. The whale is said to symbolize emotional depth and nurturance. The depth aspect comes from the whale’s ability to dive deep and then rise to the surface, releasing into the air. The tail in particular symbolizes bringing these deep emotions to light. Often, the tail is all we glimpse of the whale’s hidden life.
The use of gleaming, cool-toned sterling silver in our whale pendant brings out the fossilized ivory’s earthen hue. Zealandia jewelry often features this combination of sterling silver and rich fossilized ivory. We never tire of the interplay between this fine metal and the ancient ivory’s intricate tones.
The fossilized mammoth ivory used to carve this silver whale tail pendant is some 10,000 to over 15,000 years old, dating back to when the last of great mammoths still roamed the earth. The mammoth tusk lies in permafrost or the earth for millennia before being returned to us (often as a by-product of mining) in its current cream to deep caramel color. This wonderful material lends a touch of antiquity and rare quality to the jewelry and art works it decorates.
