In late October and into November, pregnant polar bears start to build maternity dens. They find a suitable site in a snowdrift, dig out a small cave and then wait for the snow to close in the entrance. The mama bear will spend the next 4-8 months in the den nursing her cubs, with nothing to eat or drink for herself. When they emerge in the Spring, their first task is to find food. Polar bears are excellent swimmers and rely primarily on seals as their food source. However, the shrinking ice caps threaten the seals' habitat, which in turn makes it difficult for polar bears to find enough food.
The bears are hand carved from fossilized mammoth ivory, an ancient material that is uniquely connected to the subject. Much like the polar bear's current plight, the great mammoths were once endangered and are now extinct.
The mammoth ivory featured in this piece is over 15,000 years old. It has lain in permafrost or in the earth for many thousands of years, emerging a pale to rich creamy hue that is ideal for representing the bear's distinctive coat.
