Our sweet hand carved fossilized ivory and silver panda pendant doubles as a pin, giving you two ways to wear this popular piece. Its realistic details and happy benevolence make it a favorite with panda lovers everywhere. The craftsmanship and material quality create an heirloom pendant/pin you'll treasure for a lifetime.
The panda has evolved to subsist on a diet almost entirely comprised of bamboo. Though they possess a similar digestive system to other carnivorous bears, virtually 99% of their diet is restricted to bamboo shoots, stems, and leaves. Bamboo is not the most nutritious substance, however, meaning the adult panda must consume up to 40 pounds of bamboo daily.
This pendant/pin design features bamboo in gleaming sterling silver, which provides a fine contrast to the inked fossilized ivory. The panda himself is hand carved from fossilized mammoth ivory that is then inked to depict the panda's black fur. Mammoth ivory is over 15,000 years old, dating to back before the last of the great mammoths became extinct.
The use of mammoth ivory in this silver panda pendant is especially poignant as the panda now finds his future threatened and has been listed as an endangered species.
